    Importing makhana into Canada

What clearance actually requires, who carries the obligation, and where first shipments go wrong.

Import regime and who is liable

Under the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations the importer must hold a Safe Food for Canadians licence, maintain a written preventive control plan and be able to trace product one step forward and one step back. The licence is held by the Canadian importer and cannot be substituted by our documentation, though the preventive control plan draws heavily on the specification, testing regime and process controls we provide.

Labelling that clears customs and satisfies the buyer

Bilingual English and French across all mandatory information — not just the product name. Canada uses its own Nutrition Facts table format, which is visually and structurally distinct from the US panel, so a US-ready pack cannot simply cross the border. Allergen declaration follows the Canadian priority allergen list. Net quantity is metric.

    Classification and duty

HS 0802.99 for plain and roasted, 2008.19 for seasoned retail preparations. Many nut and seed lines enter Canada at low or nil MFN rates, but the exact outcome depends on the tariff item, so have your customs broker confirm against the specific classification before you price.

None of this is advice you should act on without your own customs broker confirming the item-level position — tariff treatment changes, and it changes by classification rather than by product name. What we guarantee is the documentation: invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, phytosanitary certificate, health certificate and accredited lab analysis, prepared in-house and couriered ahead of arrival.

Route, timing and the buying calendar

    Getting it there

Vancouver via the Pacific is usually the faster lane and serves the west and the prairies; Montreal via the Atlantic serves Ontario, Quebec and the east. Toronto is reached inland from either. The 28–35 day band reflects that split — pick the coast that matches your distribution rather than the headline transit time.

    When to place the order

Diwali drives a September–November peak through South Asian retail, which is a substantial channel in the Greater Toronto and Vancouver areas. Natural-food retail is steadier year-round with a January lift.

    Supplying Canada — buyer questions

Will our Indian NPOP organic certificate be accepted as organic in Canada?

    +

Not on its own. Canada maintains organic equivalency arrangements with a specific list of countries, and India's NPOP is not among them, so NPOP certification alone does not let you label product as organic in Canada. Selling as certified organic there generally requires certification to the Canada Organic Regime through an accredited body. We can supply against that route — tell us at enquiry stage, because it changes sourcing and the certification chain, not just the paperwork.

Does the label really need French as well as English?

    +

Yes, for all mandatory label information, and Quebec applies additional language requirements of its own. Bilingual artwork is not an optional refinement in Canada; it is a condition of sale.

Can we use our US Nutrition Facts panel in Canada?

    +

No. Canada's Nutrition Facts table has a different prescribed format, different reference values and bilingual headings. The two look similar at a glance but are not interchangeable, and this is a common and expensive reprint for brands expanding north.

What is the minimum order for a shipment to Canada?

    +

500 kg for a single grade by air, or one container load by sea — around 6–8 MT in a 20ft container and 14–16 MT in a 40ft high cube, since makhana cubes out before it weighs out. Private label runs are set by the printed-film minimum, currently 1,000–5,000 units per SKU depending on pack format.

How long does delivery to Canada take end to end?

    +

Samples reach you in 3–5 working days. On a confirmed order, production runs 10–15 days, then 28–35 days by sea; 4–6 days by air Add clearance and inland movement at your end.

    Everything a buyer usually asks

Short, direct answers to the questions we get most often from importers, distributors and brand owners.

How is it shipped, and to which ports?

Most orders move by sea in FCL containers from Nhava Sheva, Mundra or Kolkata; urgent or sample volumes go by air from Delhi or Mumbai. We work on FOB, CFR, CIF and DDP terms, whichever suits your freight arrangement. Because makhana is low density, we plan the load by volume so you are not paying for half-empty containers, and we can consolidate multiple grades or SKUs into a single container.

What certifications and licences do you hold?

Bevive Retail Pvt. Ltd. holds an Importer Exporter Code (IEC), an FSSAI licence, APEDA registration, GST registration and Startup India recognition. Processing runs at our Darbhanga plant and contracted partner units operating ISO 22000 / HACCP food safety systems, and organic lots are supplied against NPOP and NOP certification. For each shipment we provide a certificate of origin, phytosanitary certificate and a third-party lab report covering moisture, aflatoxin, pesticide residue and microbiological limits. Buyer-appointed inspection agencies such as SGS or Bureau Veritas are welcome at any stage.

What is your minimum order quantity (MOQ)?

For loose bulk makhana the practical minimum is 500 kg for air freight and one container load for sea freight — around 6–8 MT in a 20ft container and 14–16 MT in a 40ft high cube, since makhana is very light and cubes out before it weighs out. For private label retail packs the MOQ is 1,000–5,000 units per SKU depending on pack format, driven by the printed-film minimum rather than by us. First-time buyers can start with a smaller trial shipment while a relationship is being established.
