    Certified origin

Organic and GI tagged Mithila Makhana

For clean-label brands and premium retailers that need the certificate, the traceability record and the origin story to hold up under audit.

    • NPOP-certified farm sourcing
    • EU and USDA NOP equivalence routes
    • Mithila Makhana GI-region origin
    • Segregated, audited processing runs

    Two claims, two different proofs

Organic is about how the crop was grown and handled. GI is about where it comes from. Buyers often want both, and each requires its own paperwork.

    Organic

    A production-system claim

Backed by farm-level certification, scope certificates, transaction certificates and residue testing. Requires segregated storage and processing to remain valid at export.

    Geographical indication

    An origin claim

Mithila Makhana identifies fox nuts grown and processed in the Mithila region of Bihar. It protects the name and gives your marketing a defensible provenance statement.

    Clean-label snack brands

Front-of-pack organic claims need evidence that survives a retailer or third-party audit.

    Ingredients

    Organic food manufacturers

Organic makhana powder and flour used in cereals, bars and baby food must carry unbroken certification.

    Everything a buyer usually asks

Short, direct answers to the questions we get most often from importers, distributors and brand owners.

    Why Mithila makhana specifically?

Mithila, the region spanning Darbhanga, Madhubani, Purnia and Katihar in north Bihar, has the shallow warm ponds that fox nut cultivation needs, and generations of families who know how to temper and pop the seed by hand. Mithila Makhana holds a GI (Geographical Indication) tag, which is a legal origin protection much like Champagne or Darjeeling tea. In practical terms the region's seed pops larger, whiter and crisper, with fewer broken pieces and a cleaner taste — which is exactly what a retail pack or a snack line needs.

What certifications and licences do you hold?

Bevive Retail Pvt. Ltd. holds an Importer Exporter Code (IEC), an FSSAI licence, APEDA registration, GST registration and Startup India recognition. Processing runs at our Darbhanga plant and contracted partner units operating ISO 22000 / HACCP food safety systems, and organic lots are supplied against NPOP and NOP certification. For each shipment we provide a certificate of origin, phytosanitary certificate and a third-party lab report covering moisture, aflatoxin, pesticide residue and microbiological limits. Buyer-appointed inspection agencies such as SGS or Bureau Veritas are welcome at any stage.

    Why import makhana from India?

India grows roughly 85-90% of the world's makhana, so there is no meaningful alternative origin at commercial scale. Buying from India means you are buying at source: better prices, larger volumes, full traceability back to the farming cluster, and access to organic and GI-tagged lots that simply do not exist elsewhere. India also has mature export infrastructure for food — APEDA registration, accredited labs, phytosanitary services and container ports at Nhava Sheva, Mundra and Kolkata — so the compliance side is routine rather than experimental.

    Organic and GI FAQs

What does the Mithila Makhana GI tag mean for importers?

    +

Mithila Makhana received a Geographical Indication registration in 2022, restricting the name to fox nuts grown and processed in the Mithila region of Bihar. For importers it is a verifiable origin claim you can carry onto pack and marketing material.

Which organic certifications can you supply against?

    +

We source from NPOP-certified farms and can arrange lots with equivalence documentation for EU organic and USDA NOP through certified processing partners. Certification scope and transaction certificates are confirmed per lot before contracting.

    Is organic makhana priced higher?

    +

Yes — expect a premium over conventional grades, driven by certified acreage limits, segregated processing runs and audit costs. The gap narrows as order volume rises.

How is organic integrity maintained during processing?

    +

Organic lots run on scheduled dedicated shifts with cleaned lines, segregated storage and separate lot coding. Traceability records link each pack back to the certified farm group.

Can we get pesticide residue testing?

    +

Every organic consignment ships with a multi-residue pesticide screen plus aflatoxin and heavy metal results from an NABL-accredited laboratory.
