The base grade every programme starts with — popped, cleaned, size-graded and moisture-controlled fox nuts, packed for container shipment.
Grades are fixed at PO stage and verified against the sample you approve.

Packing
Food-grade liners in 10 kg and 25 kg sacks, or retail pouches under your brand.
The four things that decide whether a container lands the way the sample promised.
Plain makhana — sold in the Indian trade as phool makhana, and to international buyers as fox nuts or popped lotus seeds — is graded on one measure above all others. Suta measures the diameter of the popped kernel on a calibrated sieve, and it is the single biggest driver of your landed cost. Higher grades are not simply "better" — they are scarcer. A quintal of raw gorgon nut yields only a limited share of large, unbroken, uniformly white pops, so every step up the ladder narrows the pool and raises the price. Buying 6+ Suta for a product that gets milled into flour wastes most of what you paid for; buying 4 Suta for a gifting tin produces complaints. Match the grade to the channel and the margin follows.
The kernel is porous and hygroscopic. We dispatch at 5–7% moisture, verified per lot before stuffing, because that band is low enough to hold crispness through a long sea leg and high enough to avoid the brittleness that turns handling into breakage. The risk is not spoilage — makhana is too dry to support microbial growth at these levels — it is texture. A lot that leaves at the correct moisture and then sits in an unlined sack inside a hot container will arrive measurably softer.
Breakage is a packing and handling outcome as much as a grading one. A light, hollow sphere crushes under compression, so stack height, carton strength and void fill decide how much of your lot arrives whole. We state a broken cap per grade at PO stage and verify it before stuffing rather than arguing about it after arrival. If your contract has a penalty clause on breakage, tie it to the figure on the specification sheet, not to a general expectation.
Every one of these is fixed against the reference sample you approve, which reaches you in 3–5 working days. Production on a confirmed order runs 10–15 days.
Short, direct answers to the questions we get most often from importers, distributors and brand owners.
Bulk shipments go into food-grade laminated or PP bags with an inner LDPE liner, usually 10 kg or 20 kg per bag, palletised and strapped. Because makhana absorbs moisture, we dry to 5–7% moisture and can add nitrogen flushing or vacuum packing when the transit is long or the destination is humid. Retail packs are made in metallised or transparent laminate pouches from 20 g to 500 g, with zip-lock, stand-up or pillow formats, printed to your artwork with your market's mandatory labelling already in place.
For loose bulk makhana the practical minimum is 500 kg for air freight and one container load for sea freight — around 6–8 MT in a 20ft container and 14–16 MT in a 40ft high cube, since makhana is very light and cubes out before it weighs out. For private label retail packs the MOQ is 1,000–5,000 units per SKU depending on pack format, driven by the printed-film minimum rather than by us. First-time buyers can start with a smaller trial shipment while a relationship is being established.
Mithila, the region spanning Darbhanga, Madhubani, Purnia and Katihar in north Bihar, has the shallow warm ponds that fox nut cultivation needs, and generations of families who know how to temper and pop the seed by hand. Mithila Makhana holds a GI (Geographical Indication) tag, which is a legal origin protection much like Champagne or Darjeeling tea. In practical terms the region's seed pops larger, whiter and crisper, with fewer broken pieces and a cleaner taste — which is exactly what a retail pack or a snack line needs.
Plain makhana is popped, unroasted and unflavoured fox nut — the base commodity graded by suta size, moisture and broken percentage. It is the format most importers, repackers and manufacturers buy.
We supply the full ladder from 4 Suta through Handpicked Premium. 4–5 Suta covers milling, coated snacks and value retail repacking; 6 and 6+ Suta carry mainstream and premium retail; Handpicked Premium is reserved for gifting, duty free and hospitality.
Plain makhana is dispatched at 5–7% moisture, verified per lot before stuffing, with food-grade liners to protect against transit humidity.
